Dr. Jim Carrier has been a teacher for over 40 years, working with both high school and university students across North Carolina. For the past 21 years, he has taught computer science at his local college, helping students develop the same logical reasoning and problem-solving skills that make chess such a fascinating and rewarding pursuit.
A lifelong chess enthusiast, Jim’s passion for the game has spanned decades. He was the 1988 Greensboro, NC Chess Open Champion and once had the remarkable experience of playing a game against World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov. He holds a US Chess Federation rating of 1565 (ID: xxxx5321) and continues to actively study and compete.
Jim combines his background in computing with his love of chess to bring an analytical yet accessible style to his lessons. He’s an expert in using modern chess engines—such as Stockfish and Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition—to help students understand why certain moves are strong or weak. His lessons go beyond memorizing lines; they focus on developing insight, creativity, and critical thinking at the board.
